To stay on top as the height of luxury, a new Lincoln vehicle must be ahead of its time.

Yet, how do you stay ahead of your time, when it takes years to design a new vehicle, from initial sketches, to thorough testing and re-tweaking?

It takes a team of designers and engineers with impeccable forethought and attention to detail.

Mark Taylor, Jim Smithbauer, and Andrea Di Buduo, head designers for the 2016 Lincoln MKX, tell their story.

In designing the interior, Smithbauer looks for "harmonious tension," a push-and-pull of sorts. The cabin must feel open, yet protected, stunning, yet relaxing. Quality must be considered, not only as numbers on a page, but qualitative considerations that can only be observed by sitting in the car, and experiencing it as a driver would day to day.
